How to Replace a Toyota Key Fob Battery

You can open the case of your key fob with either the hidden pry tool (newer models) or by placing an object of thin size in the notch. After opening you can gently lift the circuit board, and then locate the battery.

Keys lost or damaged

The loss of a car key or remote can be a major hassle even if it's like losing your keys or more serious such as keys that were stolen. This kind of situation isn't necessarily an economic catastrophe if you are prepared.

Toyota's new protection product, Key Replacement Protection helps reduce the stress that comes with keys that are damaged or lost. It covers up to $800 for each occurrence of the costs associated with the replacement of your key covered by the policy, or keyfob. It's available as a package with the well-known Tire & Wheel Protection or as a standalone product to be added to your loan at time of financing.

In a lot of cases, drivers who lose their Toyota key fob will be able to get help. If you can locate the fob in your workplace or at home our service specialists will be able to cut an additional one and program it. In more serious instances of theft or damage, a complete replacement may be necessary.

The best method to determine if your key fob is equipped with transponder chips is by looking at it visually. Modern models are marked with a tiny dot or dimple on the side. The earliest Toyotas did not have any transponder markings at all on their key fobs.

When trying to start a car, the last thing anyone would want is to have a broken key fob. Even when a key fob is been damaged beyond repair, it's often possible to make it work again.

The first thing to do if you notice that your device isn't responding to its buttons is to check whether the batteries are dead. It's the simplest fix that can usually be done at home. You'll need to remove the case of your key fob (you can find the instructions online) and take note of what kind of battery it's running and how it sits inside the case. You can then insert the correct type of battery and close the case. You can test the key fob by using the remote tester if have one.

It's also possible that the circuit board on the device has been damaged which causes it to not work properly. It's harder to pinpoint and fix this issue however, it could be as easy as putting water on the fob. The electrical signals are transmitted through this circuit board which then responds based on what button you press.

The board may also become dirty over time This is why it's important to clean it regularly. There are several ways to do this based on the materials your key fob is composed of. You can take it apart and wash the circuit board with an acidic solution, or try rubbing alcohol on the contacts. Be sure to use this method with care and only where it's safe to do so.
