Special features like through-the-door dispensers, high-end ice machines and flex drawers that can be customized make them stand out from the rest.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the right one. They considered the capacity of storage, layout and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that GE's Profile series is targeted at those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology in their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with features, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a clever water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly, so I expected better.

This fridge is a great option, despite the slight blip. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a good amount of frozen food in comparison to similar models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It also has a decent sized ice maker that is tucked away in the left door, though it isn't the largest I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to create a an individual storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is stylish, too. The LED lighting adds an attractive touch. The storage bins in the door include a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls, so you can set them for Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their textured plastic coatings to be a little hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price, including Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app is available on iOS and Android devices and lets you manage your refrigerator from anywhere around the world. It also offers a lot of customization options. It also sends you notifications when the door is left unlocked as well as when the fridge in french or freezer requires defrosting, and when the filter needs to be changed.

It would be nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS offered Precise fill which is a feature available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allows users to set how many cups they want to disperse. The fridge displays a countdown timer to display how much water remains, but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Created to appear as a seamless element of your kitchen Bosch's French door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also features a veggie compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer, and two compressors to preserve food. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and makes pyramid shaped ice using minimal water. This refrigerator is the ideal choice for single household or kitchenettes who want an integrated look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This fridge was rated the top in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never fluctuating by more than a fraction a degree--this is key to avoiding freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well, achieving the desired initial set temperature within a matter of hours and keeping that temperature steady throughout the course of our tests.

Bosch is known for its top-of-the-line appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi as well as Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to control and monitor your refrigerator remotely on your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is a bit expensive, but it offers great features and capabilities for the price.

While the fridge is an amazing appliance, it's important to know the limitations. You may need to get creative with tall objects because the fridge has a limited shelf space. Also, the shelves are not completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. It is easy to take out the trays from the fridge however, you must clean them frequently to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a top counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage space into the frame's compact size. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the refrigerator has an ordinary French-door design with gallon-sized bins for the doors on each door and two rows of shelves that capture spills and a set of sleeker drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded in order to create more space for tall items. There's also a full-width storage drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it easy to move the frozen ice as needed. The freezer is designed with thoughtful elements, too, like sliding drawers that help better organize the position of your items. It also has a large container for storing frozen food and a separate one for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is a cool feature of the refrigerator. You can control the temperature, lighting, and more of your fridge from your smartphone. It's an easy way to monitor your refrigerator and manage it, particularly when you're away from home.

However, while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it does not necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. The refrigerator took longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we tried. This is likely due to the bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this fridge. They have sunken handles on the front, which allow smaller people to open them from the bottom, but they're still difficult for taller people to guide closed without slamming them. It would have been better if these had front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a fridge with a French door with an efficient layout. Its capacity is higher than average for a counter-depth model, and it cools well and has a nice layout. It's also a little less than the most expensive counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, which makes it a great option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for a French door fridge that doesn't break the bank this Frigidaire is a great choice. It's a minimalist design that isn't as visually striking like some of the competitors, but it has enough features that make it a great option. Its most notable feature is the adjustable temperature drawer which helps keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge ice maker and a water dispenser.

Another nice feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you divert some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can store foods that need extra attention. You can adjust the feature using the slider located on the outside of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling setting for the whole fridge, however, I've found that changing the general settings tends have a better effect than specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in various parts of the fridge. Temperatures at the top and bottom of the fridge did not vary significantly from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. This is a solid performance, but isn't quite at the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is made of stainless steel with a grey body which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It is capable of repelling fingerprints and streaks, even compared to shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
