Pragmatics and Semantics
A variety of contemporary pragmatics theories based on philosophy focus on semantics. For example,

Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatist perspective).
Others adopt a more holistic approach to pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which aims to explore how an utterance is perceived by the listener. This approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatics,

such as epistemic discussions about truth.
What exactly is pragmatism?
Pragmatism offers an alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce initiated it, and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It was influential in areas of inquiry that ranged from philosophy of science to theology however, it also found its place in the philosophy of ethics, politics, philosophy of language, aesthetics and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.
The fundamental premise of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, a rule to clarify the significance of hypotheses by tracing their 'practical consequences that they have for specific circumstances. This leads to an epistemological viewpoint that is a form of 'inquiry epistemology' based on inquiry, and an anti Cartesian explanation of the norms that govern inquiry. Early pragmatists were divided over whether pragmatism was a scientific philosophy that embraced a monism regarding truth (following Peirce) or a broad alethic pluralitism (James & Dewey).
Understanding knowledge is a central question for pragmatics. Rorty is a pragmatist who is skeptical of theories of knowledge that are based on 'immediate experiences'. Others,

like Peirce and

James are skeptical of the correspondence theory of truth which holds that true beliefs are those that reflect reality 'correctly'.
Pragmatism also examines the connection between beliefs, reality and human rationality. It also focuses on the role of virtues and values, as well as the meaning and purpose of existence. Pragmatists have also developed a wide range of methods and ideas in fields like semiotics, philosophy of language, philosophy of religion and philosophy of science, ethics and theology. Some, like Peirce and Royce are epistemological relativists. However, others contend that this kind of relativism is seriously misguided. The 20th century was marked by the resurgence of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. They include the concept of a "near-side" pragmatics that is concerned with the resolution of ambiguity indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors, as well as the "far-side" pragmatics which analyzes the semantics in discourses.
What is the relation between what you say and what you do?
Semantics and Pragmatics are often seen as being on opposite sides of a continuum, with semantics on the close side and pragmatics on the other side. Carston for instance claims that modern pragmatics follows at least three principal lines: those who see it as a philosophy in the vein of Grice, those who focus its interaction with grammar, and those who are concerned about utterance interpretation. Near-side pragmatics is believed to include such issues as resolution of ambiguity and vagueness as well as references to proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, anaphors, and presupposition. It is also believed to encompass questions that require precise descriptions.
What is the connection between pragmatism and semantics?
Pragmatics is the study of meaning within the context of language. It is a subset of linguistics and looks at the way people employ words to convey various meanings. It is often compared to semantics, which studies the literal meaning of words within a sentence or broader chunk of discourse.
The relationship between pragmatics, semantics and their interrelationship is complex. The main distinction is that pragmatics considers other factors than the literal meaning of words, such as the intended meaning and the context in which the word was made. This gives a more nuanced understanding to be formed of the meaning of a sentence. Semantics is also restricted to the relationship between words, while pragmatics is more concerned with the interactions between interlocutors (people engaged in conversations) and their contextual characteristics.
In recent decades the neopragmatism movement been heavily focusing on metaphilosophy and the philosophy of language. As such, it has largely left behind classical pragmatism's metaphysics and value theory. Neopragmatists are working on developing an ethics of metaphysics based on principles of classical pragmatism on practicality and experiences.
Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were among the first to introduce classical pragmatism. Both were influential thinkers and published a number of books. Their works are still widely read today.
Although pragmatism can be considered an alternative to the traditional philosophical traditions of continental and analytic however, it does not come without its critics. Some philosophers, for example have argued that deconstructionism is not a truly new philosophical approach and that pragmatism merely represents an expression.
In addition to these criticisms, pragmatism itself has been challenged by technological and scientific advances. For example, pragmatists have struggled to reconcile their opinions regarding science with the advancement of evolutionary theory, which was developed by a non-pragmatist, Richard Dawkins.
Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues its growth in its popularity throughout the world. It is an important third option in comparison to continental and analytic philosophical traditions,

and has a variety of practical applications. It is a rapidly growing field of study and has many schools of thought developing and incorporating elements of pragmatism into their own philosophy. There are numerous resources available to help you learn more about pragmatism and how to incorporate it into your daily life.
