Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy
Pragmatism is a philosophical system that is based on experience and context. It may not have a clear ethical framework or foundational principles. This could result in a loss of idealistic aspirations and a shift in direction.
In contrast to deflationary theories, pragmatic theories do not deny the notion that statements are connected to actual states of affairs. They simply clarify the role that truth plays in the practical world.
Definition
The word pragmatic is used to describe people or things that are practical, logical and sensible. It is often contrasted with idealistic which refers to a person or idea that is based on high principles or ideals. A pragmatic person looks at the actual world situations and circumstances when making decisions, focusing on what is realistically accomplished, rather than trying to find the most effective practical course of action.
Pragmatism is a new philosophical movement, focuses on the importance that practical consequences determine meaning, truth or value. It is a third alternative philosophy in contrast to the dominant continental and analytical traditions. Founded by Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and Josiah Royce, pragmatism developed into two competing streams of thought, one inclining towards relativism while the other towards realism.
One of the major problems in pragmatism is the nature of truth. Many pragmatists agree that truth is a valuable concept, but disagree on the definition or how it functions in the real world. One approach, influenced heavily by Peirce & James, concentrates on how people resolve questions and

make assertions and gives priority to the speech-acts and justifying projects that people use to determine if something is true. Another approach that is that is influenced by Rorty and his followers, focuses on the more mundane aspects of truth--the way it serves to generalize, commend and avert danger. It is also less concerned with the full-blown theory of truth.
The primary flaw in this neo-pragmatic view of truth is that it stray with relativism since the notion of "truth" has been around for so long and has such a extensive history that it is unlikely that it can be reduced to the mundane uses to which pragmatists assign it. Second, pragmatism appears to dismiss the existence of truth in its metaphysical sense. This is evident in the fact that pragmatists such as Brandom who owe a lot to Peirce and James and are mostly silent about metaphysics while Dewey has only made one reference to truth in his many writings.
Purpose
Pragmatism is a philosophy that aims to provide an alternative to the continental and analytic traditions of philosophy. The first generation of pragmatists was founded by Charles Sanders Peirce and

William James together with their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1855-1916). These pragmatists from the classical period focused on the theory of inquiry as well as the nature of truth. Their influence was felt by a number of influential American thinkers including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied the ideas to education as well as other aspects of social improvement, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who established social work.
In recent years the new generation of philosophers has given pragmatism more space to discuss. Many of these neopragmatists not classical pragmatists but they are part of the same tradition. Robert Brandom is their main figure. He focuses his work on semantics and philosophy of language, but draws from the philosophy of Peirce, James, and others.
The neopragmatists have a different conception of what it takes for an idea to be real. The classical pragmatists focused on a concept called 'truth-functionality,' which states that an idea is genuinely true if it is useful in practice. Neo-pragmatists insist on the notion of 'ideal warranted assertibility, which states that an idea is genuinely true if the claim made about it is justified in a particular way to a particular audience.
This viewpoint is not without its challenges. One of the most common complaints is that it could be used to justify any number of ridiculous and illogical ideas. A simple example is the gremlin hypothesis that is a truly useful idea, it works in the real world, but it is totally unsubstantiated and

) most likely absurd. It's not a major issue however, it does point out one of the main flaws of pragmatism: it can be used to justify nearly everything, which is the case for many ridiculous ideas.
Significance
When making decisions, the term "practical" refers to considering the real world and its conditions. It can also be used to describe a philosophical position that emphasizes the practical implications in determining the meaning or truth. William James (1842-1910) first employed the term pragmatism describe this viewpoint in a speech at the University of California, Berkeley. James scrupulously swore that the term was coined by his colleague and mentor Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), but the pragmatist outlook quickly earned a name of its own.
The pragmatists resisted analytic philosophy's sharp dichotomies, such as mind and body, thoughts and experience, as well as synthesthetic and analytic. They also rejected the notion that truth was a fixed or objective, instead treating it like a constantly-evolving socially-determined concept.
James utilized these themes to investigate truth in religion. A second generation turned the pragmatist approach to education, politics, and other dimensions of social improvement under the great influence of John Dewey (1859-1952).
In recent decades, the Neopragmatists have sought to place pragmatism within a wider Western philosophical framework. They have identified the affinities between Peirce’s views and the ideas of Kant, other 19th-century idealists and the new science of evolution theory. They also have sought to clarify the role of truth in a traditional a posteriori epistemology and to formulate a metaphilosophy that is pragmatic and includes an understanding of meaning, language and the nature of knowledge.
However, pragmatism continues to evolve and the a posteriori model that it came up with is a significant departure from traditional approaches. The defenders of pragmatism have had to face a myriad of arguments that are as old as the pragmatic theory itself, but which have gained more attention in recent years. One of them is the notion that pragmatism doesn't work when applied to moral issues and that its claim "what works" is nothing more than relativism with an unpolished appearance.
Methods
For Peirce the pragmatic explanation of truth was an essential element of his epistemological plan. He believed it was an attempt to debunk false metaphysical ideas such as the Catholic understanding of transubstantiation, and Cartesian certainty seeking strategies in epistemology.
The Pragmatic Maxim, according to many modern pragmatists, is the best one can expect from a theory about truth. In this sense, they tend to avoid deflationist claims of truth that need to be verified in order to be deemed valid. They advocate for a different method they call "pragmatic explanation". This involves explaining the way the concept is used in the real world and identifying conditions that must be met in order to confirm it as true.
This approach is often criticized for being an example of form-relativism. But it's less extreme than deflationist alternatives and is thus a useful way of getting around some of the issues associated with relativism theories of truth.
As a result of this, a number of liberatory philosophical projects, such as those associated to eco-philosophy, feminism, Native American philosophy, and Latin American philosophy, look for guidance from the pragmatist tradition. Furthermore, many philosophers of the analytic tradition (such as Quine) have adopted pragmatism with a level of enthusiasm that Dewey himself could not manage.
It is important to recognize that pragmatism, though rich in historical context, has some serious shortcomings. In particular, pragmatism is unable to provide any real test of truth, and it is a failure when applied to moral questions.
Some of the most important pragmatists, including Quine and Wilfrid Sellars, also criticized the philosophy. Richard Rorty and Robert Brandom are among the philosophers who have reclaimed the philosophy from its obscurity. While these philosophers are not traditional pragmatists, they owe a great deal to the philosophy of pragmatism and draw inspiration from the work of Peirce, James and Wittgenstein in their writings. The works of these philosophers are well recommended to anyone interested in this philosophy movement.
