However, they do have a few flaws however, which prevent them from being our first choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a good value for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also quiet and works while you are at work or in school. The only thing it lacks that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. And, if you need to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can also sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles, like pet hair. It also has strong suction and self-emptying bin. It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has an exemplary 10/10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and boasts an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an easy mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's a noisy unit that could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and better-looking. If you're willing some more volume and a little more cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot mop and vacuum. It has a number of advanced features that help you forget your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take care of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you'd imagine from its price. It has a great vacuuming performance and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a rotating motion that cleans better that most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've examined. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules, or to create the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for greater efficiency. The app has a range of features, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
