If you have carpeting, choose one that scores high for rug and carpet mobility and pickup. Many models do a good job of picking up dust that has been embedded in carpets with a low pile and some do a good job of sweeping up heavier debris like orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. But they don't pick up fine particles like an upright or canister vacuum robot, and they may be unable to pick up dirt in the vicinity of thresholds and baseboards.

If you're looking for a top-of-the-line vacuum, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a great option. It comes with a large charging dock that can run for months without needing to be emptying and boasts amazing navigation capabilities and automatic floor cleaners (lt.dananxun.cn) emptying on bare floors and carpets. It also has a clever mapping system that can be programmed to only run for certain hours (a useful feature to stop mischievous children and dextrous animals from running amok). The Shark isn't as powerful as other mop/robot combination models, but it still manages to pick up pet hair and hair very well. It's also the highest price of our top picks.

Best for Hard Flooring
