You can also set up cleaning zones and 'virtual walls to block off areas you do not want the robot to go.

Certain robotic vacuums such as the Eufy 11S and my former favorite the Roborock S8, have obstacle avoidance technology that keeps them from getting sucked into furniture or getting caught in cords. Some robot vacuums, such as the iRobot Roomba j7+ have more advanced AI obstacle avoidance technology that makes use of sensors, cameras and algorithms to stay clear of items like lamp cords and pet waste. It's a little more expensive than other bots that I've tried, however it does a great job of avoiding obstacles, and never is stuck or derails while working on my floor.

The iRobot J7+ was a great obstacle-avoiding robot, but it did not always succeed at avoiding dirt or crumbs on my rugs. It also was prone to over-vacuum certain areas which resulted in a lot of dust in the filters, and a less tidy home.

Smart Mapping

A few of the top robot vacuums have an app that lets you set up cleaning modes set schedules, and view the area of floor that the machine covers. This is an excellent feature, and one that many competitors don't have. It is easy to create profiles that automatically start your robot at specific times and keep it running on regularly, for example, cleaning the living area prior to dinner or every other day.

A good app will also allow you to control your robot with voice commands. Some models are compatible with Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without using the app.

Look for a model that has a large dustbin. This allows you to complete many cleaning sessions without needing empty it. You can also find models that self-empty, which takes some of the work out of emptying the robot after each vacuuming run.
