Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves
Summary: These simple, lightweight stoves can use hexamine, wood white fuel, white fuel, and gas canisters using a single nozzle. These stoves are popular in cold weather, however they can be noisy and do not have the ability to control the simmer.
Some multi-fuel stoves burn different kinds of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal, for instance, takes both white and isobutane canister fuel.
Optimus Nova
The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with various liquid fuels. It features a quick-priming burner, a self-purging aluminium pump and precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and broad legs make it a solid, rock-solid stove. This makes it a perfect stove for base camps for groups kayaking, arctic camp.
The Optimus Nova is different from other stoves with liquid fuel that have a problem with fuel that is not burned remaining in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be resolved by simply flipping over the bottle. The intake hose is then removed from the fuel, and forces it to draw air into the stove, which smothers the flame and reduces the pressure in the bottle.
This seems like a fairly ingenious solution to an age-old problem and it definitely works. The Nova can be used with a variety of regular fuel bottles that are sealed with an o-ring, including MSR bottles. It also comes with a fully featured stove bag that includes separate pockets for tools, spare parts, lubricant and the fuel pump.
This is a great stove for backpacking that is suitable for use in the UK. It is especially suitable for trips where a variety of fuels are required. Its price is also very reasonable when compared to canister stoves that have similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and a joy to use.
Kovea Hydra
The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove first came on the market in 2010 and has been a favorite choice for many backpackers since. A few UK backpackers pay the stove a lot of attention maybe because they've gotten fallen behind with more popular brands or whatever the most recent lightweight product from China or Korea is but it doesn't mean the Hydra doesn't still have its merits.
It's a relatively compact and light stove that burns all liquid fuels including white gas as well as propane butane through a single nozzle. It's a standard stove that has the burner mounted to a body which anchors three fold-out support legs. The pump is situated just above the fuel line, and the generator loop is wrapped around the inlet, and the flame spreader sits over. The burner itself is a low velocity flame type that makes it a little less impacted by winds.
It is a very versatile little cooker because it can be used with either isobutane canisters or propane canisters. It is easy to simmer using isobutane and propane and burns all fuels at a reasonable rate. However when using white gas,

the stove runs a bit slower.
One thing to be aware of when using the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by someone who speaks the language. The instructions warn against the use of certain kinds of lighter fluid that if used in a manner that is not what was intended, could lead to an accident that could land Kovea in lots of legal hot water. That said that any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister made by a trusted brand should work just fine.
Primus OmniLite Ti
The Primus Omnilite Ti is a ideal choice for those who are looking for an all-fuel stove that can cook using a variety fuels. It can be used with petrol/gasoline, gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for every fuel type and allows you to alter the size of the flame. The stove also has a fuel line that sits flat on the ground and can be easily connected to the tank.
The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it needs maintenance to keep it running properly. It can be dangerous because it flares up when priming. This is a common issue with all liquid fuel stoves which use a second spindle throttle at the stove's end to vaporize fuel, instead of a generator coil.
It is also important to note that each fuel type requires a different jet. If you are cooking using kerosene, the jet hole will be smaller than if you were using gas. It's not a major issue however it's something to be aware of.
MSR Whisper Lite
The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the smallest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It can be used with either canister fuel or liquid gas and includes attachments for both. The new model is lighter by 10% over its predecessor, and the burner system was redesigned to improve the distribution of heat. It's ideal for novices or budget-minded backpackers.
It takes some time to install, prime, and boil water but the whistler Lite is a reliable camping stove that will not let you down. The flame is extremely powerful and can easily boil one liter of water within two minutes. The only drawback is it's not as effective for simmering as some other stoves.
This is why MSR has created the Dragonfly stove to be an efficient simmering burner. It's designed in the same way as the whistler, but it is more compact and offers more performance. However, it's not as

as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is an excellent alternative, providing a similar setup for half the price. Whisperlite International and Universal can be used with isobutane. The same design is used for both but the Universal version can be operated with fuel from canisters in addition.
Coleman Sportster II
Like many Coleman stoves this is a no frills, rough and ready unit that just gets the job done. It's sturdy and compact, and it's self-contained with the tank at the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it simple to use and a good option for backpackers, beginners who want to reduce weight, and for those of us who prefer to have a backup or two in the van.
It is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also referred to as white gas) This stove can be used with unleaded gasoline as well. This option can save you money since a gallon of gasoline can last longer than the standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.
It takes some practice to get a good blue flame on a stove with liquid fuel. You'll have to pressurize them and prime them properly before you can do so. If you don't do it correctly the fuel may pool, spray outside the burner, or sputter. Practice outside before taking it on your trip to learn how to do it.
This stove sacrifices some performance or odor reduction with non-coleman fuels however it's a trade-off for the additional flexibility it provides. Make sure to purchase unleaded gas and not something that's enriched with alcohol or methanol. That's because these types of fuels can cause the unit to be sputtering, leaky, and may even explode!
ATG Jiko
The ATG Jiko Multi Fuel Stove from South Africa is an ultralight multifuel engineered for harsh environments like Africa. It is a compact, solid stove that can burn gels, solid fuel tabs and

alcohol using only one nozzle. It's a minimalist, ultralight design that is priced lower than other multifuel stoves. It also costs less per liter than gas canisters.
Other multifuel stoves have different nozzles for each type of fuel. It isn't easy to switch between fuels in cold weather conditions, or while wearing gloves. This can increase the overall weight. Multifuel stoves of the latest model use a single nozzle to burn multiple fuels, which makes it easier. They can be described as hybrids or compressed fuel multifuel stoves. They can also be referred to under other names like isobutane, white gas, kerosene, and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.
A multifuel stove kit can be purchased to transform your Trangia burners into

cookers. These are available in camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and are available internationally. They are perfect for Trangia enthusiasts. They can burn all liquid fuels, aside from diesel, and with the right accessories, they can even simmer.
