This book is a great example of Darrow's ability to create a backstory for Avon. He also emulates the bantering dialogue style that Blake's 7 became famous for. However, unless you're a Blake's 7 fan it's not for you. The story is centered around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and disdain for their cowardice and ruthlessness.

Avon's soft side is revealed when he makes the tough decisions that are necessary to protect his team. The characters are given a deal of depth and each one has their own unique character that makes them believable. This is a story that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless and there is an authentic feeling for the world in which it is set. It's a masterpiece by an author at the top of her skill.

In addition to a broad collection of women's fiction Avon also has a strong line of crime and thrillers and a growing list of children's literature. It is the publisher for the best-selling CL Taylor and Katerina Diamond, among many other authors.

Avon's dedication to bringing the best of commercial fiction to the widest possible audience is still in place today. Avon books are dynamic, diverse and include some of the best writers of the present. The company has also a proud history of publishing historical fiction, particularly in the field of historical romance. Sometimes known as the house that invented the historical romance, Avon is still the publisher of choice for authors such as Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas.
