What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are an excellent way to fix your gear before you are at the trailhead to have it fixed professionally. The key is knowing what you can do with it if you ever need it.

Tools

Being equipped with the right tools is critical when out in the field. This kit was designed with this in mind and includes all of the essential hand tools needed to repair equipment in the field. The tools are made of steel with only a small amount of plastic to ensure they can withstand use. The kit includes a canvas zippered pouch for coalcracker tools, a twist awl, reamer cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions and a wooden spool the reamer and the twisted an awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got a hole or two in your gear, consider adding adhesive patches to your rep kit. These tough patches have high-performance adhesive that has been applied to a rugged polyurethane backing that allows a tear to recover under pressure. The patches are available in transparent or colored versions. They provide durability against punctures, as well as sunlight, water as well as extreme temperatures and saltwater.

If your kit doesn't include any of the above items, consider adding a bag of waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight adhesive will stick to fabrics, plastics, metals and more for a permanent fix. This glue is ideal for repairing drysuits and also employed in the field. It can take up to 12 hours to dry before using your repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for tents, packs and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated nylon. Includes one Clean Tape repair patch as well as a sil-nylon swatch. Also included is a 1/4-ounce Gore-Tex Repair Adhesive, Sealant and Avon Rep Starter Kit Brush and Sealant tube. Apply patch to a clean smooth surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Release the paper and rub the adhesive side down with moderate finger pressure.

Surface preparation is essential for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone or oil on boots and shoes could affect adhesion. Use Seam Grip with Cotol 240 Cure Accelerator for best results.

Adhesive Patches

These patches are ideal for those who don't want be waiting until they are back on the trail. Simply roughen the tube using the included scraper, then apply one of the self-adhesive patches, and apply the patches.

Use the tube-scuffer to roughen up the surface. This will assist the glue stick. Then spread a thin layer of glue on the patch, covering an area at least as large as the patch itself. Wait a few minutes for the glue to harden before pressing the patch into place and firmly securing it in the desired position.

This kit contains two adhesive-backed, clear Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric repair patches as well as a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive & sealant. Perfect for reinforcing damaged sleeping bags, rainwear, and packs.
