Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slots are the same for each spin. There aren't any tricks that can aid you in beating them. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to increase your chances of winning.

Slot Efficiency

The goal of slot efficiency is of increasing the number of slot switches that can be constructed without violating the constraints that are predefined. The bottom half of the list was populated with more possession-based receivers, including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. The Bucs are likely to move the latter two into the slot more often during this season, which could increase their targets. However, they'll need to improve their scoring from the perimeter to keep their high standards.

The slot is the best option for wideouts who are quick, since they are able to open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a solid target for intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the lowest of the list. They're more effective on short and intermediate routes rather than deep zones. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams' primary slot receiver this year is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler will be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, since it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver takes in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. It's not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's abilities since certain receivers excel in the slot and can't play further.

For instance, the Eagles' Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) however, he is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from outside and it's hard to get a first down in a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On contrary, some receivers excel in playing inside and aren't able to do much on the outside. Robby Anderson, for example, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to only 26% of his boundaries routes. That's a huge improvement and shows how much more productive he is when aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is inside most of the time on his passing downs and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they line up inside. They can be targeted further down the field and are often swarmed by one-on-1 coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore has the best tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. By using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime packages and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are just as good. As a group wide receivers with a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns around the same amount as those who are on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, as he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. He's running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup advantages for your team and clarify why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays at the X-position and makes big plays outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this ranking but he's highly skilled and is an excellent match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who is able to put huge numbers with targets of all kinds, is another example. He's among the best slots players in the league at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic contested-catch player.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important part of his team's defensive team. He has struggled to stop passes from the outside and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who can't match up with Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
