Buying a Convertible Single to Double Stroller

Convertible double prams

If you're looking for a pram that can grow with your family, a convertible single to double pram is a great alternative. Tandem (in-line) double prams

As the name implies the term "twin pram" refers to two bassinets or seats facing each other. Tandem prams are generally narrower than side-by-side double prams, and are easier to manoeuvre through doors and on public transport. However they don't offer the same amount of storage space and can be more difficult to access when both seats are being used when your child is in the front seat.

Some parents who are first-time parents choose a tandem stroller to protect their investment should they have children of the same age. Single prams

A single pram can only allow for 1 seat or bassinet/carry cot - it is usually suitable from birth up to around. 4 years of age. Many single prams also allow a toddler board to be attached to the back of the stroller, so that another child can stand or sit (depending on the type of toddler board) while you push the stroller forward.

This means you'll use the pram in single mode while you have one child, and then switch it into a tandem double pram after baby number two is born. This can save you the expense and stress of purchasing an additional double pram.

Tandem or in-line double prams are bigger than side-by-side double prams but are still more maneuverable on footpaths and in shops. They can be harder to use while jogging and require more effort to push up and down hills.

Side by side prams for newborns are wider than in-line or tandem double prams, but they are a good choice for families with 2 children close in age. The children will be able to view and interact with one another from their seats. However, they are not as maneuverable and may not fit through doors as easily as tandem strollers.

Non-convertible side-by-side prams cannot be used in single mode. You will need to buy another pram or a stroller for your children's younger ones. They have the advantage of being less expensive and last longer than convertible double prams, because they aren't built to be used in single and double modes. The biggest drawback is that your older child could quickly outgrow a side-by-side and need to be moved to a toddler's seat. This can be costly.
