How to Choose the
best coffee beans for bean to cup machines
Coffee Pod Machine
A pod machine is a great option for those looking to have a quick and clean morning coffee fix. But how do you pick the most effective one?
With a nod to the retro design, this machine boasts the SMEG and Lavazza branding across its front. It is more expensive and will take up a lot of space on your counter. But, it's an excellent pod coffee maker with a sturdy feel.
1. Nespresso Compatible
If you're a Nespresso fan, you'll want to pick the
best coffee pod machine
compatible with the brand's capsules. You may also want to consider a model that can use different types of capsules too, like organic and Fairtrade choices or specialty flavoured pods. They are usually available for a similar price to the originals and some include an inbuilt milk frother, which allows you to make an espresso or cappuccino.
Bruvi's entry into the pod machine market in 2022 was met with awe. This brightly-coloured device promised a range of beverages and a more satisfying cup of coffee than any other pod machine, and pods that can be thrown away without worrying about the environment.
It delivers on all three counts. This compact pod coffee maker is affordable and makes an intense, rich espresso every time. It's also one of the most silent models available and you can prepare your cup of Joe before your alarm rings.
The Bruvi is available in two sizes and can be adjusted based on the type of drink you're making. It has three settings to control the temperature and texture of the milk while making a cappuccino or latte. It can also brew hot cocoa, which is ideal for both kids and adults who are looking to relax.
Another big plus is the programmable sleep mode that switches to standby after an hour of no use. It is also easy to clean, and uses very little water. You might want to consider a machine that has a removable capsule holder to make emptying the capsule easier.
There are several additional accessories that you could add to your coffee pod, including a milk frother (unless it's part of the model you purchase). You may also want to consider an reusable coffee filter that can be used with capsules that can be reused. A thermometer or water kettle to control temperature precisely is a great option.
2. Easy to Clean
The convenience of a coffee pod machine allows you to start your day with a quick and hot cup of joe. Simply load a pod and switch it on, and within only a couple of minutes you'll have a freshly brewed beverage. These machines are also very easy to clean and most of them don't require daily maintenance, just refilling the tank with water and decaling every six months or so.
Keurig's K-Cups come with the broadest selection of choices available, including national brands and grocery store favorites such as Folgers, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Dunkin' Donuts. There are even some non-coffee options, such as hot cocoa and tea available in K-Cup forms from several different brands. You don't have to use Keurig K-Cups to enjoy a great cup. You can also make it using filters that are reusable and made of plastic or paper and hold ground coffee, pre-loaded drippods or loose grounds of coffee.
But a lot pod-based machines don't have the reputation of producing an intense, rich cup that holds up to the most discerning palate. In our tests, we found some pod coffee makers that make watery or bitter cups of coffee. Others were so difficult operate that they occupied valuable space on your counter and tended to run noisily.
There are some high-quality pod coffee makers that provide the ease of use and consistency of a single-serve coffee maker without the sour taste and flimsy packaging. Some come with a built-in milk frother that allows you to foam and pour your cappuccino or latte, while others sell an additional frother that you can plug into the machine to provide a deliciously foamy top to your drinks.
The newer pod machines don't just make a great cup of coffee, but they also tackle the increasing concern about environmental impact associated with single-serve pods made of plastic. Both Keurig and Nespresso have made their aluminum pods more recyclable by replacing them with polypropylene and the latter now offers free capsule-recycling bags which can be picked up at any of its retail outlets or UPS locations. Bruvi is a brand new competitor, utilizes pods that can only be used with its own brewers and are designed to break down quickly in landfills, leaving no microplastics.
3. Fast Brewing
A pod coffee maker can be a lifesaver for people who don't want grind beans or boil a kettle. These fool-proof machines can make coffee, tea or espresso in minutes without any cleaning up. These machines create more waste than their drip-style counterparts but are still much more simple to use than brewing whole beans in a French Press or Pour-Over.
In the latter half of 2022, an LA-based startup known as Bruvi launched its BV-01 coffee pod machine. It promised to make better-tasting single-serve joes, provide more beverage options than pod-based machines, and provide reusable capsules that could be thrown away without breaking down into microplastics. Although the Bruvi brewer is more than Keurig or Nespresso however, it is a great device all around that is like the dawning of a new era in pod coffee.
One of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing a coffee maker is serving size. Some models can sling single-serve cups in a wide variety of sizes, from giant travel mugs down to 2-ounce espresso shots. Other machines can make entire pots of coffee, and some even have a milk frother to allow you to add a smooth cappuccino or lattes to your morning cup of joe.
Another factor to consider is the design of a pod coffee machine. The color, the finish and location of the machine, as along with the size and position of the water reservoir will affect how it looks on your counter. Certain brands provide different colored pods so you can alter your drink to suit the season or mood.
Pod coffee makers are usually designed to be compact, taking up less space than traditional single-serve and drip brewers. While a compact footprint is nice however, it's important to ensure the machine has enough capacity to make several cups between refills. Most pod coffee makers should have a tank of water that is at least 40 ounces for the average household.
4. Variety of Drinks
The pod machines are versatile, and depending on the manufacturer, they can make a variety of drinks. Some brands, like Keurig's famous Keurig systems and Sage's Nespresso collab, can make up to four different drink sizes while others only offer two or one option. Some machines can also prepare hot cocoa, tea and cold drinks.
Some pod coffee machines come with built-in milk frothers that can make cappuccinos, lattes and other frothy drinks. Some require a separate milk jug or an integrated one to accomplish this task. The best milk-frothing machines are simple to use and offer precise control. They also feature a sleek design that can be incorporated into any kitchen.
The Grind One is a great example. It's a sleek design that's a step away from the curvatures you see on other pod coffee makers and is smaller than most Keurig models, making it ideal for kitchens with small spaces or dorm rooms. The reservoir can hold up to 40 inches of water and is easily accessible. Used capsules are automatically deposited in an attached container. Other than keeping the reservoir filled and descaling every six months or this means that the machine needs little maintenance.
This machine is more expensive than many of the other models we've reviewed but it offers a premium experience. The brushed stainless steel finish is sleek and modern and the drip tray can be adjusted to fit tall or short espresso cups as well as travel mugs. It can brew up to five different drinks due to an RFID system that scans every compatible pod to automatically alter its settings.
This is the best-looking machine we've test. It also produces an excellent tasting brew, especially for an automatic. We didn't award this machine the top spot because it's limited in its ability to milk froth. The only choice is to use dried skimmed milk capsules that do not taste as good as freshly squeezed milk. If it had a built-in milk frother then we'd probably give this machine the top spot.
