You can configure the bot by plugging it into its base, and connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial setup (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi and the name of it and so on, etc.). After it's fully charged you can then start a cleaning cycle.

Once the D4 is running the app lets you create a schedule automatically or manually at any time. You can also make use of your voice to control it using Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you have an Apple Watch you can start cleaning by tapping the wrist.

This model did well in our lab tests of both carpeted and hard floors, capturing 91.3% combined of debris in serpentine paths. However it's not as effective at edge and corner cleaning as other models. The side sensors keep the D4 about 1.5 inches away from walls. Also, it doesn't have the side-sweeping brush that is found on all, if not the cheapest robotic cleaners. The raised turret means it isn't able to be placed under furniture with low clearance. It does support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw red lines on your floor plan to inform the D4 not to move there. The battery time of 75 minutes is also fairly average. This is an affordable price to pay for the convenience offered by this model.

2. iRobot Roomba 990

The Roomba 980 from iRobot is the flagship robot in the company's lineup with a promise of top performance and connected features. The 980 is priced at $899/PS899, though it's often cheaper if you shop around on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to begin).

The 980 has the most modern cleaning system of any of our top picks, including a HEPA filter that can capture tiny dust particles and allergens to ensure better air quality in your home. It also supports a variety of floor surfaces including tile and hardwood.

The 980's top-mounted camera sensor SLAM, and ability to navigate through tight spaces like hallways and corners is one of its most notable features. iRobot refers to this technology as iAdapt 2.0 and it utilizes images from the camera in order to create an internal map. This helps the 980 keep its track of its location, so that it doesn't waste cleaning time on areas it has already cleaned.

iRobot also added new smart capabilities, including a spot clean function that lets you mark an area of your house as being off limits to the 980. This was not the most advanced or the largest that we tested, however it was effective and a welcome addition. The 980 can be controlled with voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant. The robot may take a while to send an order.

The Roomba can return to its base station automatically when it's finished cleaning, making sure it's always ready for the next adventure. This feature is exclusive to the 980 and makes the robot vacuum with obstacle avoidance lidar more practical.

3. iRobot 985

It's also iRobot's most powerful vacuum, capable of grabbing dirt with more granular debris and larger pet hair, unlike other mid-range models, such as the Roomba 960. This is because the cleaner has wider brushes that rotate counterclockwise and a motor with greater suction power.

The Roomba 995 is iRobot’s least expensive vacuum, with recharge and resume. However it isn't equipped with the auto-empty feature that the I6+ or I7 offer. It lacks the iAdapt navigation 2.0 and the camera utilized by the I7 to identify objects and avoid obstacles. This means that it won't be able to save maps or access features in-app that contain information, such as no-go zones.

The iRobot isn't equipped with mopping capabilities. This isn't a problem if you're only interested in a high-quality vacuum, but it is an important disadvantage for anyone looking to buy an iRobot that is a hybrid.

The Combo J7+ is another iRobot that comes with an automatic empty. It can mop and vacuum. It has the same navigation capabilities as the I6+ and I7 but does not have iAdapt 2.0 and camera.
