Three Wheeled Buggies

If you're looking for a buggy to run with or just a compact stroller for strolls around the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies are great for mobility. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight spots.

If you want an easy ride in your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. They are, however, susceptible to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.

Sturdy frame

New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies, that emblem of the noughties, which had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. They are being replaced by four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, yet still look elegant and easy to push.

The basic principle is that the larger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back makes it much easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 wheel travel system year old and found it was able to withstand grass, cobbles, rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt solid to push and very stable on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need periodic pumping) have suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my kids.

Another thing to think about is the size and shape. The seat should be big enough to allow your child to feel comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies have the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a parent-facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and wet walks. The buggy can be used as a one-person unit from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family expands. It is suitable for toddlers and infants from birth until age 4. It includes a bumper, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a big padded seat. Storage options are also great with a large basket and zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels means that your buggy will have more stability on rough terrain - ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also help you navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies feature swivel wheels on the front to aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is also helpful if you bump into an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel will lift up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

A lot of 3 wheel jogger wheeled pushchairs come with air-filled tyres which allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are also more susceptible to punctures, so you'll require a repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.

Both buggies feature larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and can easily move up and down kerbs. Buggies with larger wheels may be quite wide, and may struggle to fit into narrow spaces. This is an issue if you're using it as a jogger or you need to to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and about. The majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the main benefits to a three-wheeled buggy is that it can be much more maneuverable especially with a child in the back. They are designed so that the front wheels rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as parks, cobblestones as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her toddler and newborn and said: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough terrain, with the swivel front wheel being particularly helpful. I was also awed by the way it handled kerbs, especially when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable going downhill or on a rough terrain."

The only downside of this great maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean that it can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to keep in mind especially if you live in a metropolitan area. If this is a problem then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better choice for you.
