Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for strolling around the neighborhood or for jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight spaces.

If you want an easy ride in your baby, select models with 360deg front wheels that can swivel. They are prone, however to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.

Sturdy frame

Recent figures have been released revealing that the three-wheeled buggy - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sanity - is in steep decline. They are being replaced by four-wheelers that can handle a wider range of terrain, yet still look elegant and easy to push.

The general idea is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear allow you to move and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy out with a newborn and 3 year old and found it was able to handle cobbles, grass, rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She noted that it was solid to push and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require occasional pumping) come with suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my children.

Another thing to consider is the size and shape. The seat should be large enough for your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies will have a full lie-flat option while others allow a parent facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or walking in muddy areas. This buggy is suitable for a single child as early as birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat. The storage options are good too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets inside the hood, and an attractive pouch at the back of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also make it easier to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have wheels that swivel on the front, which assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you crash into the kerb or a tree. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to avoid hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres, which means they can handle different terrains and are far more flexible than 4-wheeler. They're also lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you'll require repair kits and an spare inner tube in your arsenal.

Both of these buggies come with larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and can easily climb and descend kerbs. They also have a suspension that according to Kath "smooths out bumps with great efficiency".

The downside of having larger wheels is that they make some buggies quite broad and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This could be a problem if you use it for jogging or you need to get through doorways that are narrow when out and about. Many models have compact folding options, which permit you to take off the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to manoeuvre

A three-wheel buggy can be more maneuverable for children. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels turn on a dime, and are easy to move, making them ideal for difficult terrain like cobblestones, parks as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3 wheel reversible stroller-wheeler with her toddler. she reported: "The Terrain is a delight to navigate on uneven terrain. The swivel wheel front was particularly helpful." I was also impressed by the way it handled the kerbs, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. I found it to be extremely stable when going downhill or over uneven ground."

The only drawback to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when you live in one of the cities. If this is a problem, a 4-wheel buggy might be a better option for you.
