Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.

If you want a smooth ride on your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. They are prone, however, to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.

Sturdy frame

Figures have just been released revealing that the three-wheeled buggie - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. They've been replaced with four-wheelers that can handle a wider range of terrain, while also looking stylish and easy to push.

The basic rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it'll be for your buggy to deal with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested this buggy with an infant and a toddler and found it extremely durable. It handled grass, cobbles and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt solid to push and extremely solid on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasional pumping) have suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my children.

Another thing to think about is the size of the seat and shape. It is important for the seat to be large enough for your child to feel comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies have a lie-flat option that allows the child to face you, whereas others only allow a face-to-parent one.

An excellent option for taking on off-road or muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. It can be used as a single unit from birth and then adapts to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a large padded seat unit. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets in the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with a greater diameter

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability while driving on rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for off-road buggies. They also help you maneuver the pushchair through narrow spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have swivel wheels on the front, which help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock for increased speed and stability. This also helps if you bump into a tree root or stray kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

A lot of 3 wheel buggy wheel pushchairs have air filled tyres which means they are able to handle many different terrains and are far more flexible than 4-wheeler. They are also lighter. They are also more susceptible to punctures, so you'll require an repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3-wheelers. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which she claims "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also come with a suspension system that, in her words "smoothes out bumps very effectively".

The downside of having bigger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite wide and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This is an issue if you're using it as a jogger or to to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and out and about. Many models have compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to manoeuvre

One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she reported: "The Terrain is a delight to navigate on uneven terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was particularly useful." I was also awed by how well it coped with bumps, particularly when using the brake operated by hand. It was very stable for descending or on a rough terrain."

The only drawback to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel jogger wheel travel stroller (more information)-wheel buggy may make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you need to keep in mind if your home area is an urban area. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better choice for you.
