Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.

After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

It was the first time in more than 31 year that all of Toto's original members performed together. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

However, the group resumed touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album was a return to the band's best form and the tour that came with it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both rejoined the group.
