Three Wheeled Buggies

If you're looking for a smooth ride on your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. However, they are more prone to punctures, so be prepared with a repair kit.

Frame made of sturdy material

Recent figures have been released showing that the three-wheeled buggy - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sanity - is in steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, and are more versatile and easier to drive while still looking stylish.

The bigger the wheels are the more your buggy will be able to deal with uneven surfaces and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front enable you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and a 3 wheel baby buggy year old and found it coped well with grass, cobbles, rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt solid to push and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require periodic pumping) offer built-in suspension which was extremely comfortable for my children.

The shape and size of the seat is a further factor to consider. You want the seat to be large enough to allow your child to feel comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies will have an option to lie flat completely while others allow the parent to be facing one.

An excellent option for taking on off-road and muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. It can be used as a single unit from birth and then adapts to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers from age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness, and a large padded seat unit. Storage options are also great with a large storage basket and zip pockets on the hood, and a handy pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability while driving on rough terrain. This is perfect for off-road buggies. They also allow you to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies feature rotating front wheels that aid you in maneuvering around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability with which they can be pushed. This is particularly useful when you hit a tree or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.

A lot of 3 wheeled pushchairs come with air-filled tyres which allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they are prone to punctures so you'll need to keep an repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.

Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and can easily climb and descend kerbs. They also have a suspension system which according to her "smoothes out bumps very effectively".

The downside of having bigger wheels is that they make some buggies quite broad and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This is an issue if you're using it as a jogger or to to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and about. Most models come with compact folding options, which permit you to take off the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to maneuver

A three-wheel buggy can be more maneuverable for a child. The way in which they are constructed means that the front wheels turn at a quick pace and are really maneuverable, making them ideal for tricky terrain like cobbles, parks and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 wheel stroller with bassinet-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough terrain, with the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also impressed by how well it dealt with the kerbs, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was extremely stable when going downhill or on uneven terrain."

The only downside to this amazing maneuverability is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something to be aware of if your home area is one of the cities. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeler might be a better option for you.
