Saab Key Replacement

It can be a real pain to lose or have your car keys stolen. If you have an extra key, attaching an additional key to your vehicle is relatively cheap and easy.

Lost or Stolen keys

It's as easy as ever to copy the key to your vehicle as it was 20 years ago. The only difference is that modern keys have an electronic chip inside the keys. These chips provide a huge amount of protection against key theft and copying. However, this doesn't mean that you'll never lose your key.

Lockouts

It's expensive to get an additional key, and it requires the dealer to install and program a new TWICE Module (Column Integration Module for older vehicles) as well as a brand new OEM key (not purchased from Amazon or eBay).

If you're having issues with your remote control keys not locking or unlocking your car, you should look for a variety of possible causes. The most frequent reason is a dead coin-cell battery inside the key fob, but it can be caused by worn-out buttons, water damage or receiver module issues.

If the issue persists after you have tried all of these, try reprogramming your ignition key. This is done by changing (in inverse Hex) the number count to zero in the ECU. To do this you need access to the case of your car key fob. This can be accomplished by removing your emergency keys from the fob. You can then use a flathead to remove the case from the fob and expose the battery. Don't pour or drop liquids in the fob, as this can cause damage to electronic components.

Broken Keys

Every saab key fob programming since 1995 is required to have an immobilizer system in the vehicle, which makes it nearly impossible to steal your car without a specific key. A transponder with a specific code must be incorporated into the key to allow the car to start and unlock doors. The key also needs a transmitter/transponder chip that needs to be matched with the car's computer module in order to work. This can only be accomplished by dealers using a tool called Tech-2 or similar software.

It is not recommended to remove your broken key from the lock or ignition. This could cause damage to the lock, and cause other problems. If you attempt to force a broken lock or key out, it is likely to break the blade of the key's metal or the mechanism of the lock. This could be more expensive than hiring a locksmith replace the key.

Replacement

Saab owners who purchased their Saab from 1994 and onwards are advised to keep two working keys for their vehicle. Replacing one key is costly and complex. The dealer must replace both the CIM (Column Integration module) or TWICE, depending on the model. They will also have to program the key in order to work with the new module. Claimed-new keys from aftermarket sellers are generally not properly programmed and may not program correctly when you need them.

It is not unusual for the battery in a key fob to get worn out after a couple of years of use, specifically when it is frequently used for locking and unlocking the car. Fortunately, replacing the battery in most SAAB 9-3 key fob models is quite easy and doesn't require any special tools.
