Best Over-Ear Headphones
Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds encapsulate the ears completely. They also have bigger drivers that provide deeper bass and a bigger soundstage. They also have active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.
The Master & Dynamic MW65 has been upgraded with improved audio and features, including numerous ANC mode and an impressive battery life.
1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless
Sony has improved an already great pair of headphones with the introduction of the WH1000XM4 wireless. They are less heavy, more durable,

and have a more balanced audio profile (though bass-heavy). They also have an app for audio customization. They've improved their active noise cancellation, removing the background noise and have a longer battery life.
These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and Sony LDAC is also compatible with. This codec can transmit high-resolution audio, however, you'll need compatible devices and a streaming service. In addition, the WH1000XM4s can connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and switch between them if needed. This feature is enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect App and is very effective.
One subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensibility of their touch panels. They respond quicker to the touch of panels and are simpler to control when making calls or listening to media. Sony has also added a feature that helps voices sound clearer and more precise during calls which is noticeable and a nice addition.
The WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, but they are among the best wireless headphones that we have ever examined. They're comfortable, feel well made, and have an impressive battery that can last more than 30 hours continuously. They can also be used in a passive manner using an TRS cable which is perfect when you're on the road or need to conserve power.
The WH1000XM4s are a better alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also come with a companion application that lets you adjust their audio performance, and their EQ settings are more flexible than B&W's. The B&Ws are built better, and can pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Additionally, they support aptX HD, and they have an AI-driven engine that attempts to boost compressed music to high-resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it enhances the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.
2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless
The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the latest iteration of a headset that became a staple for commuters and passengers around the world. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, adding USB-C, better noise cancellation and longer battery life.
These over-ear Bose headsets have a premium feeling and look, much like the QC 35 II headphones that preceded them. The headband is made of plastic, yet it has a sturdy feel with metal hinges at the pivot points, and the familiar ratcheting action when you extend or retract the earcups. The cups are soft, cushioned pads that fit comfortably over the ears and don't apply pressure on your head. When folded they weigh 238 grams. They can be used while wearing a coat or sweater as the noise cancelling function works even when they are not on your head.
Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones they do not offer the best sound at this price point. The frequencies are flat and lack the detail that more expensive headphones may be able to bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is acceptable for most music genres but can be problematic for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is good but lacks power.
One feature that's missing is the ability to pause playback whenever you take off the headset. This is a standard feature in this price range and is something that Bose's rivals have offered for a long time. Another omission is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app, but it would be nice to have an option to manually control.
You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with multipoint support as well as more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. Download the Bose Audio App to adjust the voice and sound settings.
The QC45s also come with four microphones built into the headset to listen to your voice during calls. The call quality is generally very good but the headphones don't have the nifty ability to mute your voice during playback which is something that other wireless headphones have. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s in February 2022 introduced manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a very welcome change.
3. Focal Bathys Wireless
Focal is a French audio company known for high-performance headphones that last for a long time, comfort and a style that makes listeners feel like they're listening to something truly special. Their first attempt at wireless noise cancelling headphones, the Bathys, are stunning headphones that sound and look great. They have a high-performance USB DAC built in, which means you can use them both for wired and wireless listening.
Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for 30 hours. We actually got a little more, with over 40 hours on average of a single charge. If you have to charge the headphones, the indicator light on the right earcup will change red.
They have a decent amount of features for a pair of
cordless headphones
of this price point, including support for multiple devices at once and automatic pairing (though you'll have to select your source device every time you would like to listen). The headphones come with built-in microphones that can be used with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. They also come with an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to manage your music and make calls.
Bathys over-ear headphones do well in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient noise by an average of 9 decibels. It's not as effective as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless, but it's still very effective.
In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones The Bathys did well overall, with a an overall frequency response that is in line with the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with just minor deviations in the mids and bass. They have a bass-rich sound profile which adds plenty of boom to the mix, however, it can make instruments and vocals like cymbals sound dull.
You can wear them wherever without worrying that others will hear your music. Their microphone is of decent recording quality via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid - to treble range.
4. Sennheiser Momentum 4
The Sennheiser Momentum

) headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid, but not spectacular entry in this class. The new pair is a step up from the previous model, sporting a more sleek design, better gesture control, and a huge battery life.
Many of the improvements aren't that obvious, but they make a pair of over-ears that seem like a step up from the old one. The Momentum 4s lie flat and don't fold, but they do come with a sturdy hardshell case to protect them on the go. The Momentum 4s are also compatible with all devices, just like other Bluetooth headphones of recent years, such as those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. This means they work with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, however they do not come with the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked Spatial Audio) that you'll find on the AirPods.
The most obvious improvement in this model is the huge battery that promises up to 60 hours of playback with the noise cancellation option activated. This is easily twice the amount of the competition and enough to take a multi-day journey without having to search for an outlet.
Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating with a focus on their audio quality and ANC as two of their strengths. The only thing he dislikes is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and the treble. This means that orchestral tracks tend to sound flat rather than grand. The bass is rounded, but it's easy to over-emphasize and can cause fatigue in songs that have heavy bass lines like the drum hits in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals sound smoky rather than full, and there's no real sense of depth in the bass.
The Momentum 4s should not put pressure on your neck or ear. They can be a bit fidgety if you wear them at home or for long listening sessions. They can move on your head, and make rapid head movements. This can cause them wake up in a sudden manner, which could be distracting while listening to music or making calls. They will shut down automatically after 15 minutes and can be switched off manually using the power button.
