How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked window pane is an issue. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows, and benefit from more comfort, higher potential for resales, and less costs.

You can do it yourself for only a fraction of the cost it would cost to hire an expert. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

Replace your old single-paned windows using tempered or insulated glass to increase energy efficiency, reduce noise, and protect the historic integrity of your old home. The procedure of replacing windows is easy and can be completed by anyone with basic hand tools. Alongside a replacement pane, the following items are required for the replacement upvc window handles process: latex glazing putty glazier's points; pliers; and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty, if needed. Wear safety glasses and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Begin by removing any broken pieces of glass. This is best done using the help of pliers though using a flathead screwdriver can also be used in the pinch. Then, use a wood chisel or putty knife to take the remainder of the old putty from around the frame and the sash. Be careful to not scratch the window replacement cost sash. After you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. Before applying the putty on the surface, you must knead it thoroughly until it becomes soft and free of lumps. Make it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip to the frame's corner. Work from one corner to another, making sure it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are small triangular pieces of metal that help secure the glass to the frame without causing any damage to the fragile surface. It's easy to learn how to use this nefarious tool and you can save money on the expense of an expert installation.

After removing the old putty, glazier points and any residue Clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. Lightly sand the wood in the rabbet grooves, if necessary, to smooth rough areas. If you sand wood, cover it with painter's tape to avoid accidental damage.

Note down the exact dimensions of the frame. Take these dimensions to an hardware store or home center and have the new pane cut smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure that the pane fits comfortably and allows for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane into the frame and push it in using your hands. Use the chisel's point or the back of the putty knife to tap the glazier's points, as illustrated in Figure 11. The glazier's points should be flush against the top edge of the pane and the shoulders raised should be just below that lip.

Apply a thin layer glazing compound to the rabbet grooves and the edges of the glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Let it dry and cure fully.

Install the new window sash when the glazing compound has dried. First, saturate the wood with a thick coat of Linseed oil. This will prevent the new putty from drying out and cracking when it absorbs moisture. Apply this coat with a brush or Replace Window Pane the edge of your putty knife, then use the chisel or the back end of the putty knife to gently hammer in the new sash and glazier's points into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process at intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A hurled baseball, an errant rock or falling branch could cause a window pane to break or crack. Luckily, most windows can be easily replaced by simply putting a new piece of glass in its the right place. The glass is held in position by a small metal clip, also known as a glazier’s point and putty. This compound is also referred to as glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first get rid of the old one and clean the area with an abrasive and the pull-type paint scraper or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves when you work. You'll need a heat gun when the window is fixed into the frame.

If you are planning to Replace Window Pane your original sash, you must remove the molding that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready to receive new caulk. Once the sash is re-installed then, apply a new silicone caulk around the glass to ensure that it will not leak or change color as time passes.

Take the glazing points out of the rabbets, or the grooves in the sash where the glass is. If they're difficult to chisel, use the hand tool, such as a heating gun over them for a few minutes to soften them. When using a heat tool, be careful to avoid damaging the sash or its railings.

After the old glazing points and putty have been removed make a bed for the new pane. Roll a piece of glazing compound between your hands, and form it into a 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. It is crucial that the glass is positioned against the putty on each side, so if you need to tap it, gently press the glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack, you can cover it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. In other cases, you'll need to putty over the crack to create an impervious seal to keep water out. After the putty has dried and the film is oily, wipe it off the glass with a rag and allow it to completely dry before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it won't create an effective seal and could leak or discolor in time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, you might be worried about the cost of a new one. The truth is, replacing a single pane glass doesn't have to be costly if you do it on your own. In fact, even a double-pane window can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of an expert.

If you're working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This can be done relatively easy and fast using the appropriate tools and techniques.

When you are ready to begin taking down the old window pane. Take out the metal glazing points attached to it. These are tiny triangles of metal which act as "nails" that hold the window in the frame. They are buried under a bead of glazing putty that is then cured to form a solid, formed wedge that holds the window firmly in place and conceals the edges.

After taking off the old pane clean the frame and the wood. Scrape away any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves where the glazing points were. These should be sanded down to bare wood, to allow you to paint them the same color as the rest of the frame. After sanding, apply a layer of flax oil on the bare wood to prolong its life.

The next step is to measure the dimensions of the window's opening. You'll need to take vertical and horizontal measurements of the entire opening, as well as the thickness of the old pane. To get the exact size of the new pane subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass. You can bring these measurements to a hardware or home improvement shop and have the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
