Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a nationwide shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing issues and an increased global demand.

Our service is private ADHD titration instead of waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A thorough evaluation of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This includes a complete medical history and an evaluation using the common ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

Following your assessment you will be informed if medication is considered to be beneficial in your particular situation. This will happen at your follow-up appointment (which can be done in person via video link or by telephone). Your doctor will explain the various options for medication and, if you decide to start on medication we will offer to titrate dosage to ensure the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process may take several weeks and requires gradually altering your child's dosage until the appropriate balance is reached. It's not uncommon to need to titrate two or three medicines before finding the best one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It's important for parents to participate in this titration process and keep an eye on their child's behaviour so that they can inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to return to NHS care the medication you take will be issued with an individual prescription that you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You will be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual exams are also required.

Follow-up appointments

Once the assessment is completed and you are satisfied, you can schedule follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist. The appointment usually takes place via a zoom video call, although in certain cases it may be possible to do an audio-only consultation (again at an additional cost).

We will then discuss the options for treatment and then decide on a bespoke, individualised ADHD medication adjustment. This will include an assessment of your medication dosage and an examination of any negative side effects you may be experiencing. These titrations cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 via telephone or video consultation. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will ask questions about your family history, the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life and any relationship problems or mental health issues you might be experiencing. ADHD can be a genetic condition, so it's important to assess your family background to determine if you're at a greater chance of developing this condition.

During this examination, it is essential that you are honest and honest with the clinician who will use the information you provide to determine whether you meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial part of the process, as failing to do so could lead to an inaccurate diagnosis and consequently an inappropriate prescription of medication.

If you decide to receive treatment for ADHD we'll schedule an appointment for a follow-up visit with a psychiatrist who is specialized in this field. This can be done within the first few days of your diagnosis if you are eager to begin treatment immediately or within two weeks if you would like more time to think about the implications of your diagnosis and the alternatives that are available to you.

If you aren't sure which one you prefer, we suggest that you speak with your GP prior to scheduling your private assessment as some providers have different policies regarding whether they require an GP referral letter or not. We also suggest that you check whether your GP accepts a "Shared-Care Agreement which means that once you are discharged from the clinic you will be referred back to them for the medication prescription.

Medication

The medication process is an essential aspect of the treatment process for many who are seeking a private ADHD diagnosis. It can be difficult to get a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long and GPs might be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.

Inquiring your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). This means that you can select a provider that offers a private assessment and titration service. This will help you to save time and also be more convenient, particularly in the event of a hectic work schedule.

Once you've been recommended, your physician will evaluate your condition to determine if you need medication adjustment. You will need to fill out forms that are different for each provider, but the most common ones are self-reporting forms and medical histories dating to childhood and adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor to determine if there are circumstances that indicate you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication, when they've been prescribed.

If you are being titrated on medication, it will typically include a mix of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. These will be carefully trialled and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any medical conditions you may have. The titration process may be long and could require a few extra appointments before you are stable on your dose.

Depending on the type of medication you are taking, follow-up appointments could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. Your clinician will check that you are stable with the medication, document any side effects you've experienced, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain on a dose that what is titration adhd safe. Some patients may be content with their treatment and therefore do not need to discuss their titration process further.
