First of all, the cold water goes in through an opening in the reservoir's bottom, and into the aluminum tube beneath the resistive heating element. The aluminum water tube is heated until it reaches boiling point, bubbles appear that push water up the white tube in the center of the coffee maker.
The hot water squirts from the top of this tube and then into a perforated plastic disc, which is known as the shower head (or basket in some machines). Here, the hot water is sprayed on the coffee grounds, which absorbs its oil-based essence.
Then the water runs down over the coffee before flowing back up through the filter to your pot. This is all caused by the oscillating pressure created by the pump. The expanding and contracting of the bubble boundaries exerts a shearing force that extracts coffee particles from water leaving a strong espresso-like beverage in its wake.
