Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
