In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an alternative producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
