Driving License Category A2
The category A2 driving license permits you to drive motorcycles with no sidecar and the maximum engine power of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the vehicle must not exceed 0.2kW/kg.
This driving license was created to permit you to get your motorcycle driving licence early, and then move on to the A2 licence, which has more engine power.
Scooters and motorcycles
The second level of a motorcycle licence is the driving license category A2. This allows you to drive mopeds and small motorcycles up to 50cc. This class allows you to gradually increase the engine power of your vehicle and to fantasize about larger engines. The test is more complex and requires more knowledge.
The category A2 driver's license is valid up to the age of 24. It is valid alongside a category A1 car driver's licence or as part a provisional driver's license. If you're over 24 years old, however you require a full category A driving licence to drive motorcycles with more than 35 kW.
You can obtain an A1 group driving license at the age of 16 (in Denmark and Malta, 15; in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia 14). Once you are over the age of 16 you must pass the A2 category motorbike test. You need to pass the test before reaching the age of 18. After two years, you are able to move to category A.
After passing the test in the category A2 you can drive a motorcycle with or without a sidecar, and three-wheeled vehicles with a power range of up to 35 kW. These vehicles must have a weight/power of not greater than 0.02 kW/kg, and cannot be directly derived from a vehicle with twice the power.
If you have completed the two-part test for a moped or motorcycle of a lower class as of July 1, 1996, you are able to skip the theory test and only take the practice exam. You can ride a smaller moped or scooter with L plates, or get the new AM licence, which allows you to ride up to 50cc bikes with a maximum speed of 45mph. The

licence is only valid if you've passed the test in your theory and have completed nine hours of training, divided into practical and theory lessons at a driving school.
Motor vehicles with 4 wheels
This category includes all motorized vehicles that have four wheels, with the exception of buses and passenger cars. Also, it includes utility vehicles such as vans, pickups and panels. Also included are motor homes, campers and trucks. This category could also include vehicles like hearses, ambulances and carryalls that are designed to transport more than eight people or have a maximum authorised mass of greater than 750 kg. A1 drivers are able to operate vehicles of this type with a trailer that weighs up to 750kg.
You must pass the theory test to be able drive a vehicle in this category. You must pass 12 90-minute classes on the basic material, as well as 4 90-minute lessons on the additive (category AA2). The theoretical tests are a pass mark of 70%..
After passing the theory test you will have to pass a driving test on public and private roads. After passing both tests, you will be issued an application for a driving license. This request should be submitted to the local authority within three years after passing the practical test.
Once you have passed your driving test, you can begin driving vehicles of the category A2. In some countries, after holding a full A1 license for two years, there's no requirement to take an additional test to get a category A2 driving licence, which allows you to drive motorcycles with up to 35 kW. This is a way to get experience driving less powerful two-wheel vehicles before moving up to more powerful machines.
If you hold a driving licence of category A2, you are able to ride a tricycle as long as it has the capacity of 125cc, and a maximum power output of 11kW. This category was earlier part of the A licence. All drivers who were issued the full category B license before the 19th of January, 2013 were entitled to use mopeds too and continue to enjoy this privilege.
Motor vehicles with 5 or more wheels
This category includes vehicles equipped with motors designed to be used on the roads for the transportation of goods or passengers. These vehicles should have at least 2 or 3 wheels that are in contact with ground and a driver's seat or saddle and a motor able to reach speeds of 20 miles an hour or more. These vehicles come with brakes as well as a steering wheel. They can also be controlled and travelled in reverse. In some instances the hoods of these vehicles may be opened. Historically, this classification has used to describe trucks (van, mini-van, panel, pickup, sport utility) and buses that carry 16 or more passengers. However, a separate set of federal requirements governing uniform licensing standards for commercial vehicle drivers follows a slightly different definition which excludes vehicles with gross weight ratings of 26,001 or more.
In addition to this, the category A2 driving license can also be used to drive a moped, motor-driven bicycle, or motorcycle. This type of driving license is only valid for motors with an cylinder capacity of 125 cubic centimeters, or a maximum power of 15 kilowatts. This license can also be used to drive a motor tricycle. This license class requires an age minimum of 16 years old. Physically disabled people could also be eligible to drive motor tricycles in category A1 or A.
Some people opt to get an operator license that is valid for vehicles with a an authorized maximum weight of 3,500kg and eight passenger seats. Drivers who have an operator license are also allowed to tow trailers that weigh up to 750kg MAM. They are also permitted to transport a trailer as heavy as 3,500kg with a tractor or construction equipment.
The designs of different types of three- and two-wheeled vehicles continue to evolve, it is essential that NHTSA keep its guidelines to date. Importers, manufacturers and import experts frequently seek clarifications from the agency regarding the proper classification of vehicles. In the end, NHTSA has developed a number of guidelines that can help determine the classification of these vehicles. These guidelines include:
Motor vehicles with trailers
The category A2 includes motorized vehicles that have trailers. These are not vehicles pulled by the driver, but rather are towed behind larger vehicles like cars. For example, a tractor pulling trailers falls under this category, as well as small trucks that have been designed for carrying loads, like those employed by plumbers or painters to transport tools and equipment to their work sites. The maximum allowed mass (MAM) for this category is 8,250kg.
To drive a vehicle in this category you must have passed the theory test for category A1 or have obtained a driving license by direct entry. You may also have to pass a driving test depending on the kind of vehicle you intend to drive.
The license you are granted for Category A2 is valid for a period of three years, beginning at the time you have passed your theory test. To keep it valid, you must renew before the expiration date.
In addition to the categories listed above, you can obtain a license to drive other vehicles that have special requirements. You need a special license to drive a large vehicle (category C) and you have to be aware of the specific rules for the transport of dangerous goods.
A car driving licence in category B permits you to drive a combination of two vehicles and a trailer that don't fit the conditions of category C. This is where the code 96 comes in. The code 96 will be added to your driving license category B if you've passed both the theory and practical tests however your vehicle or trailer does not qualify for an a Category C license.
