What is Code 95?

Code 95 indicates on your licence that you have completed the initial qualification for professional drivers (basiskwalificatie in Dutch). Professionals who have C (truck or bus) or D (bus licence) must pass this course.

This training is also compulsory for those who drive overseas for work. This is particularly important for people who drive with the category D license.

Professional truck and bus drivers

This is required for both truck and bus drivers who wish to be employed in the European Union. The document is also used to ensure the safety of cargo and passengers on the road. Those who wish to obtain an official code 95 driving permit must complete a theoretical course that consists of 35 lectures. After the course is completed they must pass an examination to obtain a certificate. In the event that they fail their test, they will have to take another course to get certified. Truck and bus drivers need to have a variety of abilities and skills in addition to their driving skills. These include customer service and communication and the ability to plan routes and navigate. Regular training

All drivers who transport passengers or goods professionally in the European Union must have the Code 95 on their driving license. This means that the driver has completed a minimum of 35 hours of training over a period of five years in the country they reside or work in. As a truck driver you need to have an official driving license with the maximum weight that is greater than 750 kilograms. This license is known as C-licences in the Netherlands and you must comply with strict rules regarding rest and driving periods.

You can register your European licence using Code 95 and proof of the required periodic training with the CBR if you have completed the training in an EU member state. Then, you can swap your European licence to one that is a Dutch one.

In the Netherlands it is mandatory to renew your Code 95 licence once every five years. The renewal process involves completing a a refresher course of at least 35 hrs, which is divided into different topics and modules. Some of these modules are required while others may be selected by the driver.

Renewal

Once every five years professional truck drivers (categories C, C1E, C) or bus drivers (categories D1, D1E, D, DE) are required to renew their professional driver's licence through a training course for Code 95. After completing the 35-lecture course, a five-year validation is added to their driving license or certificate. This allows them to perform commercial transport services on a regular basis.

In the Netherlands, the code 95 is added to any category C or D licences for drivers of buses, trucks or lorries. This means that the driver is allowed to operate vehicles of these categories that have a maximum mass that is greater than 7,500 kg. The addition of code 95 to the license also permits the driver to drive the tractor trailer.

To renew the code 95 indicator on the driver's license, the driver has to take an annual refresher course of 35 hours within the programmes of each year and can be spread over the five years when they must renew their license.
