In Path of Exile, item upgrading is one of the best ways to upgrade your gear without relying on large-ticket drops or trade. This article will show you how to upgrade your items efficiently.

Upgrades to equipment give an additional bonus to the item's stats. This bonus is based on the upgrade component level and rarity.

Components

Upgrade components can make your armour and weapons better. They can be obtained by destroying enemies, finding them in item spheres, or purchasing them from karma sellers. They can also be rescued from equipment that contains them, or through a high-tier salvage kit like the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. In contrast to other items upgrade components, upgrade components aren't destroyed when they are removed from an item.

The main function of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded but they also serve other purposes. They can be used to increase the quality of an upgradeable item or they can be used to enhance the experience gained by upgrading an existing weapon or piece of equipment. They can be forged to give extra bonuses. A crafted glyph can increase the chance of upgrading its target while boost upgrades increase the defense or attack capabilities of the weapon.

You can connect an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will display an upgrade component list that the item can be upgraded to. You can also use the workbench for selecting an upgrade template. In either case, an item will be upgraded when enough upgrade components have been gathered.

Each component has its own experience multiplier that affects the amount of experience an item receives when it is upgraded with that component. Organic components, like have an increased multiplier of experience than mechanical components. It is therefore recommended to upgrade using organic components until you have reached the experience multiplier for the next rank of the equipment or weapon, and then switch to mechanical upgrades.

In addition to the multiplier of experience every item also has an maximum number of upgrades it can receive. The number of upgrades is determined by its upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade available to the upgradeable item. For instance, the highest possible weapon upgrade is a weapon with tier 10. The most popular weapon upgrade is a tier 6 gun and an armor upgrade for tier 5.

Sets

A set is a collection of objects that share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at least once. The upgrade will increase the guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade an item, its initial stat will be +1. In subsequent upgrades the primary stats will be increased a bit further (for instance, +1 to 12+/13+/14+) Every time you upgrade the item level upgrade with an additional stats is increased randomly.
