Rep kits are the perfect way to fix your gear until you can get to the trailhead and get it repaired professionally. The trick is to know what to do when you require it.

Tools

Having the right tools available is critical when out in the field. This kit is designed with this in mind and includes all the basic hand tools required to repair equipment in the field. All of the tools are made of metal with only a small amount of plastic to ensure they can withstand use. The kit comes with the pouch made of canvas that is zippered to hold the coalcracker tools, as well as a twist awl, reamer, cutting shears and Gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions and a wooden spool the reamer and the twisted awl.

Repair Patches

You might want to consider adding adhesive patches to your kit if there are a few holes in your equipment. These heavy-duty patches come with a high-performance adhesive pre-applied to a durable polyurethane backing that allows a tear to heal under pressure. Available in clear or colored options they offer a long-lasting protection against punctures, moisture sunlight, saltwater, and temperatures that are extreme.

If your avon starter kit isn't stocked with any of the above items, think about adding a bag with waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight glue will adhere to fabrics and metals to provide permanent repair. This glue is ideal for fixing drysuits and can also be used in the field. Give the sealant at least 12 hours for it to cure before you can use your repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for tents, packs and rainwear made from silicone-impregnated nylon. This kit includes one Clean Tape patch and a sil-nylon repair sample, plus a 1/4 ounce tube of Gore-Tex Sil-Fix repair adhesive & sealant and brush. To use, place patch over a clean, smooth surface of the area that has been damaged with at least 1/2 inch overlap. Release the paper and rub the adhesive side down using a moderate amount of pressure.

Surface preparation is essential to ensure successful repairs. Oils on boots or shoes, sunblock or solvents like Acetone could affect adhesion. For the best results, you should apply Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed the curing process up to 2 hours.

Adhesive Patches

These patches are great for those who don't wish to wait until they get back on the trail. Simply roughen the tube with the included scraper, apply one of the self-adhesive patches, and roll on.

Use the tube-scuffer to roughen up the surface. This will aid the glue stick. Then spread a thin layer of glue on the patch to cover an area that is at least as large as the patch. Wait for the glue to get tacky then press the patch down firmly and secure it.

This kit comes with two adhesive-backed, clear Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric repair patches as well as a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive and sealant. Perfect for reinforcing damaged tents, rep kit sleeping bags, rainwear, packs and boots.
