What is OBDII?
Prior to recently the majority of car manufacturers had their own systems to diagnose problems with their vehicles. Then in 1996, the government demanded that all vehicles have an established system to read diagnostic codes. This new system, which is known as OBD-II and uses the same port and diagnostic code system for all models and makes of vehicles that are sold in the US. This means that if you have problems with your car, it will be easy for any mechanic to figure out what is causing the issue by plugging in a specialized tool.
The OBD-II detects a variety of problems within the engine as well as other components using the standard diagnostic plug. The information is stored in the car's computer for later analysis. This lets the system detect and repair any faults before they cause major damage.
