1. iRobot Roomba 11S

The 11S is a cheaper self-emptying robotic vacuum cleaner that lots of users seem to enjoy. It is great at maneuvering under furniture and appears to be a good option for people with hard floors or those who want to perform light daily cleaning. The suction might be less powerful than the suction of our top picks, but it still gets the job accomplished. It comes with a huge dust bin as well as a long-lasting battery. The app lets you schedule daily cleanings or pick a room. It's also possible to draw a map of your home, which can help the device avoid areas you don't want to visit.

The app is simple to use and has a clear layout. It doesn't have any advanced capabilities, but it's simple enough to use and allows you to monitor the status of your robot. It also has a tutorial which will walk you through the basics.

Bounce Navigation's cleaning patterns aren't always intuitive. Sometimes it follows straight lines, and at other times, it concentrates on the edges of a space. The iRobot Roomba is easier to maintain and has lower costs for recurring maintenance and charges faster. It also has a larger dustbin and is more effective on all types of surfaces, and it can climb over low-lying obstructions (like electrical cords) more easily.

The RoboVac 11S is a good choice for regular vacuuming. It's designed in a similar way to our top pick, and it is great for picking up small particles and dirt on hard flooring. It also does a decent job on low-pile and medium-pile carpet. It has a large dirt storage container and utilizes BoostIQ for automatic suction power adjustment. It also has an easy-to-use remote control to operate and allows you to program daily cleanings using the app. Its battery lasts about an hour and the dustbin can be emptied without removing it from the dock.

2. Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is a great robot vacuum cleaner and mop with a surprisingly wide array of automation options. The Roborock S7 MaxV is available in three different versions that include the basic S7 model, the S7 Plus model and the S7 Ultra. Only the latter has an Empty Wash Fill Dock (or an alternative Auto-Empty Dock). These docks allow the robot to return to its home base and empty the debris into a dust bag or reservoir, empty the dirty water tank, and wash its mopping pads.

The S7's sensors work in tandem to avoid obstacles and clean floors. It can recognize the types of floors, save a map of rooms and zones, and even detect levels of dirt. It's also capable of scheduling and executing spot cleaning sessions. It was able to perform well in our tests, but it didn't quite match the iRobot Roomba j7+ in our carpet deep clean test.

You can program the S7 with the companion app to run a cleaning cycle in accordance with your schedule. You can select an option for cleaning that is eco or automatic, and the day, week or even a time. You can also decide whether the robot should stop if it runs out of power or comes across an obstacle.

You can still make use of the S7 even if you don't own a smartphone by connecting the charging dock to a remote control. The remote controls can be a bit difficult to understand initially, but once you've mastered the use of them they work well. The power button functions as the general 'Clean' function and the "Spot Clean" button instructs the robot to clean small areas around itself. The 'Spot Clean" button also activates the child lock.

Roborock's mobile app has been upgraded to include a live-view function that lets you see what the S7 does at home. You can activate it by pressing a particular sequence of buttons on your S7 and then you can create an unlock pattern within the mobile app, which you can use at any time you want to know what the S7 is doing.

3. Shark IQ Large

Shark's robot vacuums aren't as popular as those from iRobot or Roborock. But our tests on the ground have proven that this model is one of the most effective self-emptying vacuums available. It's simple to set up, comes with an enormous bin that's easy to empty (albeit somewhat loudly) into a trash can when it's full and is easily programmed to do a complete home cleaning schedule or as needed.

The IQ XL can connect to your home WiFi, which lets you monitor it from the Shark app and see its battery levels as it cleans. The app lets you program cleaning schedules, get notifications via push about its status it is in, and pause and resume cleaning, or set it to a single room. You can also control it with voice commands using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The app will inform you which power mode is currently selected which is Eco, Maximum, or Normal - but we found that none of these modes produced a noticeable improvement in the performance of cleaning.

The IQ XL will automatically empty the dustbin at the end of each cleaning cycle into the base, which will then self-empty. The bin can store up to 60 days of debris, meaning you won't have to empty it more than once unless your pets have hair that is long. If you do need to empty it, you can simply detach the side container and place it over your trash can and press a button.

There's not much to dislike about the Shark IQ XL, although it feels a bit less robust than the Roomba 694. It does a good job of cleaning carpeted floors but doesn't match the iRobot Roomba i7 when it comes to the performance of bare floors. The i7 is also built better and feels more durable and robust, has less demanding maintenance requirements, is able to charge lower costs for recurring expenses, charges faster, while offering similar battery performance and much more advanced automation features, such as no-go zones and the capability to select specific rooms for a clean.

iRobot j7+

This robot mop/vac combo is a rare beast, because it can do both tasks very efficiently. iRobot Combo j7+ has all the features and smarts of its j7 counterpart, including LiDAR map and self-emptying. It also comes with additional features for mopping and vacuuming.

The j7+ makes use of the latest acoustic sensor technology to identify the floor type and allows it to vacuum or mop the room during its initial pass. This information can also be utilized to help prioritize cleaning rooms with carpets and rugs versus those with hard flooring.

The j7+ is quieter than most robotic vacuum self emptying vacuums when running, and even quieter when it's mopping. The maximum reading of 64db on our decibel scale is comparable to general office chatter.

It's easy to set the schedule to clean and alter what the j7+ does when its dust canister is full. The j7+ is also controlled by voice assistants, such as Alexa, Google Assistant and other. The app allows you to create and view maps in your home.

In our tests, the J7+ was a solid performer on both hard and carpeted flooring, removing the majority of the dirt we tossed at it. It struggles a bit with pet hair and larger debris such as sand, however it can remove these items with a little more effort. It also has decent navigation capabilities and a set of cliff sensors to prevent it from plunging down stairs or getting stuck on furniture legs.

We did notice some minor issues with the j7+, mostly that it can snag on rugs and cords and that it doesn't always shut off its mopping once it's finished vacuuming. Otherwise, this is an excellent model that ticks all the right boxes.

iRobot J7+ is one of the top auto-emptying systems we've tried. It drops its 14oz/0.4-liter dust canister in the base station, and it automatically emptys itself. This reduces the amount of trash that you must dispose of. You'll only need to replace the dust disposal bag at the dock once every 60 days, depending on the frequency you use the j7+.
