Keyless Entry

BMW Digital Key allows you to lock and unlock your car by tapping your smartphone. To begin, download the app from Apple Wallet or Google Play Store and follow the on-screen instructions. Once you've connected your compatible mobile device to your BMW Connected account, you can share access to up to five family or friends members who also have the app. If someone accepts your invitation, they'll be able to unlock and start your car without having to carry a physical key. This feature works with or without data connection even if your phone is set to airplane mode.

The convenience of the BMW Smart Key goes well beyond simply unlocking your car. You can utilize the BMW Smart Key to unlock the trunk and control your HVAC and check the fuel level and more. You can also prepare your car's interior so that it's cold or warm when you arrive. The only caveat to this is that your BMW must be equipped with Comfort Access installed from the factory or retrofitted by a BMW authorized dealer. You can verify whether your car is equipped with Comfort Access with a free online BMW VIN decoder. The window sticker will show "S322A", if you have this feature.

When you are ready to set up your new BMW Digital Key make sure your smartphone is charged and located in the same area as your vehicle. Place your iPhone in the smartphone tray and click "Start Pairing" from the screen of your vehicle's BMW Connected app. Once your phone has been paired with the vehicle, you are able to remove the iPhone from the tray.

Once you're ready to add other users, simply go to your BMW Connected account and select 'Add New Digital Key'. You will need to enter your contact information and the VIN of the vehicle you wish to grant access. You'll then be given an entry code to enter on your mobile device. After the code is entered, your smartphone will display the BMW key icon within the Apple Wallet app.

Battery replacement key bmw

If the batteries in your BMW key fob get depleted and you're thinking, "Can I replace the battery on the BMW fob?" The answer to this will depend on the type of BMW fob you have. The older diamond-shaped BMW fobs, for example are not designed to be used for battery replacement. The backplate is attached so removing it would cause damage to the fob. The CR2450 battery or CR2032 can be replaced in newer fobs by removing the fob.

For the more popular smart key models (like the ones in the 1,3, 5, 7 and X series) you can use the small tab to release the valet key in metal and then open the access port by using a screwdriver or another thin tool. This should reveal a small groove. Make use of the tool to push in the small tab and then remove the valet key to reveal the CR2032 batteries inside. Replace the old battery with a new one, and then put the cover back on.

If you own a Display Key with a touchscreen, you will need to take a different approach. The Display Key is water-resistant but not as waterproof as the standard fob. You must be careful not to expose to too much water. Although it is able to withstand an immersion in the washing machine, it is best to treat it as you would treat your smartphone- don't worry about rain, but keep it away from a water body.
