Certain robots can connect to smart assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant to provide a environment that is hands-free. Look for models that can recharge and pick up the area they left.

1. iRobot s8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combination is an excellent choice for many homes. It can be used to vacuum and mop and is extremely navigable using both GPS and laser sensors and comes with a variety of features and controls that are accessible via the app. It also comes with a useful feature that lets you add Cleaning zones for certain areas that require extra attention, and also to keep Out zones where you don't want it to move. It also gets software updates, like the other Roomba products, that improve the quality of the product over time.

It's expensive, but it's is also one of the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It has a high-powered battery that can vacuum an entire home in less than two hours. It can switch between vacuuming and mopping with the press of a button. It automatically empties the bin of dust above its charging station, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the bin after each run.

It's got a range of other features that make it an excellent choice for homes of all sizes, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses the camera as well as processor-powered smarts to see obstacles. It's not often damaged or stuck during cleaning and is the best at avoiding power cables and other objects in my tests. It is not as accurate in detecting pet waste, or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

Eufy, owned by Anker, has become an established brand in the world of low-cost robot vacuum black friday vacuums. But it didn't provide a model that could also mop. This is changing with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive set of modern features and is able to compete with more expensive models.

The most significant selling point for Eufy with the X8 is its laser navigation. The X8 utilizes laser mapping technology that is more accurate than the previous Eufy devices. It also takes significantly less time to construct an accurate map of your space and stores multiple maps, which is ideal for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a good vacuum on floors with no dust that can carry debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. Its tyres are also very adept at hugging corners and edges despite being circular. It's not the best cat litter picker, though our tests have shown it is able to remove around 90% of the fur from hard floors.

There's a basic mopping option that utilizes the same water tank as the vacuuming one. This is great for spills that are not too dangerous, smart robot vacuum but you are unable to control the amount of water that it uses. It does a good job of removing hair from pets. It has a higher pick-up rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

The company is known for its quiet home appliances, Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, gorgeous design and excellent navigation. However, it does have a few operational oddities that keep it from ranking as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technology that uses a LIDAR to map an area, and a pair 3D scanning cameras to detect and staying clear of obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room has been mapped it is possible to assign virtual no go areas and favorite sections to the robot. You can also alter the cleaning modes, start a manual clean or watch live feeds from the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 has superior sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions in a flash. The suction and sweeping power are top-notch cleaning up surface debris from carpets of medium pile and dust on floors with no floor. It's not the fastest robotics on the market. As with many others it's not a great climber and smart robot vacuum has issues with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

Some people buy robot vacuums because of the ease of setting up a schedule using an app, only to forget about them for weeks. It's important for a robot to be capable of the task and that's why our ZDNet staff has compared and looked over some of the most popular models to help you pick the right one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac that looks like any other, but has some extra features and a better performance. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home and makes use of to navigate and avoid obstructions. It's even able to spot common obstructions such as furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors along with a bump detector, and an infrared sensor to keep the vacuum away from steps makes it one our most agile vacuums.

In our tests, it was able to climbed over thick shag rug and didn't end up stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation abilities were impressive as well; its composite score in carpet and bare floors topped the competition and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded pet hair from our lab test samples.

The controls are less basic than those of the competition's. There's a cleaning button at the top and you can either start it using the app or via voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or daily cleanings, set up no-go zones and view the history of cleaning. Ion is covered in a smart dark gray plastic that looks and feels attractive in your home. Its rear dust bin is easy to access for emptying and cleaning the filter is equally easy.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is an excellent option if you're looking for a robot vacuum that's simple and doesn't have any frills at a cost that is low. It's not equipped with some advanced features such as Alexa integration and digital mapping found in more expensive models. If you do not need these features, you could save money.

The robot is simple to use and set up. It doesn't require a smartphone app or Wi-Fi pairing, but it does come with an remote control that lets you choose between different modes and adjust the suction level. It also lets you manually send the robovac off during scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, we found that the 11S was extremely efficient in cleaning dirt and fur from carpets and floors with low pile. Its slim profile helped it reach under furniture and other low items that some of the more bulkier robots couldn't reach. It was also able to easily get over thresholds for doors and move from one type of floor to another.

Like other robots, the 11S will take in some objects such as cords, drawstrings on hoodies, and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you avoid this by keeping these objects off the ground and by using a cord organizer if possible. It also recommends cleaning the dustbin on a regular basis replacing the filters, and washing or changing the brushes when needed.

Roomba 990 from iRobot

The Roomba is the flagship model of iRobot's robot vacuum. It's pricey however it's a top performer and arguably the most advanced robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self vacuum robot-navigation as well as environmental mapping are a joy to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than many competitors, such as the ability to set virtual boundary markers through its mobile application. It's a capable robot vacuum, even if its app is a bit sluggish and the 980's wheels spin out when it is pushed over cables.

We love the 980 due to its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM) to remember your home's floor plan.
