Zolpidem tartrate is available as brand-name Ambien and generic zolpidem, along with the metered spray sold as ZOLPIMIST. Some insurance companies put Zolpidem on the most expensive level of copays. This makes it costly.
AMBIEN assists patients in falling asleep. It does this by reducing brain activity. AMBIEN comes in strengths of 5 mg and 10mg in tablets designed for oral administration. The dosage should be administered once every day in the evening either with or without food. If the medication is taken with food, the onset and length of the sedation can increase. This medication is not intended for use by kids. This is a controlled chemical which can be used to treat addiction. Be sure to keep it out of pet's reach and children's. This medicine should be stored in a safe, dry location and away from moisture and light. If the expiration date has passed already past, avoid using. Dispose of unused medication properly by mixing with a non-abusive material such as cat litter or coffee grounds, and then putting it into a trash can.
The most often known adverse effects of AMBIEN is drowsiness or sedation. Sedation can make it difficult to complete tasks that require focus, for example driving or operating machinery. This effect usually disappears within the first few hours of the administration of AMBIEN. These effects are more likely at higher doses.
The most frequent complaints are dyspepsia and hiccup. Infrequent: nausea, anorexia, constipation, stomach pain, vomiting. Infrequently, the Hematologic System and lymphatic leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia.
The elderly or debilitated may be more susceptible to the effect of this drug on sedation. This drug's use for such patients should be restricted to the shortest duration possible. The drug is cleared slow in patients suffering from impaired liver function, and therefore the dose should be reduced to the lowest effective dose. (See the WARNINGS and PRECARATIONS for specific populations). AMBIEN can interact with many different medicines. Let your doctor know about any medicines that you are taking that include prescription or non-prescription medicine, herbal supplements vitamins, and any other supplements.
Inform patients that AMBIEN could result in sleep-related disorders (e.g. sleeping-walking, talking, driving, preparing and eating food) as well as that serious injuries or even death has occurred in these cases. Patients should consume AMBIEN before going to bed and should allow a full night's rest (8 hours) prior to engaging in activities requiring full alertness the next day [see WARNINGS AND Precautions].
Be aware that AMBIEN could cause drowsiness, dizziness, diminished consciousness, blurred/double vision and drowsiness which could increase the risk for falls among older people. AMBIEN should be avoided by patients until they're fully awake. It is also advised not to be operating machines or operate vehicles after taking AMBIEN.
Inform women to refrain from breastfeeding. not advisable with AMBIEN as zolpidem can be found in the milk of infants and is known to induce respiratory depression in newborns. [See Use in Specific Populations]. AMBIEN should not be given to children.
