RS485, also known as TIA/EIA-485 is a standard serial communications protocol defining the electrical characteristics of a serial converter, drivers and receivers for use in balanced RS485 digital multipoint systems. The advantage of the RS485 protocol is that this it can transfer data over longer distances, up to 4000 feet, and have up to 32 nodes per single network, and it can be used for multi-point networks where multiple serial devices are setup in a bus network. The RS422 converter is used for data transmission, using balanced or differential signaling, it is mainly used in industrial and commercial environments since lots of process equipment and machinery have this protocol built-in. RS-485 standard conformant drivers provide a differential output of a minimum 1.5 V across a 54-Ω load, whereas standard conformant receivers detect a differential input down to 200 mV. This robustness is the main reason why RS-485 is well suited for long-distance networking in noisy environment.
Why use a RS232 - RS485 /RS422 converter? The two jacks are for RS485 cable in and RS485 cable out. Confirm serial port parameters such as baud rate, data bits, and stop bits: Baud rate should be configured according to the connected RS485 device, commonly used rates are 9600 and 115200; Refer to the device manual or contact RS485 device technical support for configuration, especially if set to Modbus mode, confirm if the function code matches. Use a 485 to USB serial cable, connect it to the interface of the 485 device and the computer's USB port, assign a COM port on the computer, open serial debugging assistant software, set the serial port parameters consistently, input the corresponding COM port, and monitor the data from the 485 device. RS485 is simpler because it uses only two wire (or a single pair) to carry out the data in bidirectional manner, using RS232, we need 3 wires at minimum to carry the data bidirectionally. So in order to transfer data from a RS232 serial interface engineers need a converter to be able to connect to a RS485 or RS422 interface. Security when and where you need it! All the ‘A’ terminals must be connected together and all the ‘B’ terminals must be connected together respectively.
